In addition to performing, Rachel offers private voice lessons in her studio in the Alta Visa area of Ottawa. Her vocal technique emphasizes vocal health and longevity, and is suitable for most musical styles, including mainstream pop, country, jazz, classical choir music and solo repertoire, to name a few. She also teaches sight singing and ear training for both singers and instrumentalists. Teenager and adult lessons are typically 1 hour long. For children 5 to approximately 12 years old, Rachel teaches private, semi-private or group lessons. The lessons are 30 minutes in length and emphasize basic skills: singing in tune, good breathing and posture habits, and enunciation. These lessons are built around repertoire and techniques from Waldorf pedagogy. Small children are exposed to pentatonic music and songs that follow the seasons and the natural rhythms of the earth. Rachel also teaches Music and stories for babies (0-12 months) and toddlers (1-3 years) at the Plant Community Centre at the corner of Preston and Somerset streets. These classes are designed to teach parents and guardians songs and stories to share with babies and toddlers. They have the added benefit of engaging tiny children on a direct musical level. Once again, these classes are inspired by the Waldorf approach to teaching music. Musicians' Association "Find a teacher" Student testimonials:"As someone who has been in education for many years, I have a good sense of what makes an excellent teacher. My top three qualities would be: a serious commitment to learning mixed with a capacity to enjoy the process of teaching; a deep understanding of the subject and an ability to communicate this understanding to those with less expertise; and a willingness, and the analytical capacity, to focus on where students currently are in their learning trajectory. This describes perfectly my experience of Rachel as a voice teacher. I learn something useful and important in every lesson. She has an amazing knack of pinpointing what needs to be done (or usually in my case, not done!) in order to make a more comfortable and beautiful vocal sound. Plus, she has a wonderful sense of fun and is genuinely excited for her students when they show any kind of progress." – Janet Siltanen "Rachel structures each lesson with not only the individual student in mind, but also the particular day in that student's life. She brings to her teaching a thoughtful and experienced approach to technique, a wealth of metaphor, and a sense of play. Her great strength lies in finding a teaching moment in every musical passage, no matter how short and regardless of genre. Rachel has helped me to find my true singing voice and to rediscover the joy of song." – Peggy Robinson |
